Best Time to Visit Cancun

The Best Time to Visit Cancun, Mexico w/ Weather & Events

With so many things to do, when is the best time to visit Cancun? Cancun is a world-renowned vacation destination for a reason: its stunning beaches, vibrant nightlife, and a plethora of all-inclusive resorts make it the perfect place to relax and escape the stresses of everyday life.

The answer depends on what you’re looking for. Cancun’s weather is warm and sunny year-round, but the busiest (and thus most expensive) time to visit is during the winter months when North Americans are looking to escape the cold.

If you don’t mind crowds and are looking to take advantage of cheaper flight prices, visiting during the summer or fall months is a great option. Keep reading to learn more about weather conditions in Cancun throughout the year.

January – March: High Season

If you’re looking for perfect beach weather, these are the months for you—temperatures hover around 80 degrees Fahrenheit with very little rain. However, this comes at a price; hotel rates are at their highest during this time as travelers from North America and Europe flock to Cancun to escape the cold weather back home. If you’re set on visiting during the high season, be sure to book your flight and accommodations well in advance.

April – June: Low Season

Temperatures start to climb in April, reaching an average high of 90 degrees Fahrenheit by June. However, this uptick in temperature is accompanied by an increase in rainfall; April is Cancun’s rainiest month with an average of 5 inches of rain per month. While hotel rates are lower during this time, keep in mind that some tours and activities may be closed due to rainy conditions.

July – August: Hurricane Season

Hurricane season officially runs from June 1 – November 30, but storms are most likely to form in July and August. That being said, hurricanes are relatively rare; Cancun was struck by two major hurricanes in 2005 ( Wilma) and 2020 (Delta), but otherwise has been largely unscathed by these severe storms. If you’re not comfortable traveling during hurricane season, consider booking your trip for another time of year.

September – December: High Season

As temperatures begin to cool down in North America and Europe, visitors flock back to Cancun for one last dose of sun and sand before winter sets in. You can expect beautiful weather during these months, but remember that hotel prices will be higher than usual due to demand.

Conclusion

No matter when you choose to visit Cancun, you’re sure to have a good time–but if you want warm weather and fewer crowds (and are willing to deal with a higher chance of rain), April – June is the best time for you to go. Looking to snag a deal? Visit during the summer or fall months when tourist traffic starts to die down. Just be sure to pack your sunscreen!
